Compounds and Vaccinations

Hello Baldwin Woods Family! It’s been a while since our last post and we have some great new changes going on in our pharmacy world. One of our newest and proudest additions is compounding. Compounding is the custom creation of medications for specific patients. We are excited to offer creams, gels, capsules, suppositories, and we can even make lollipops and gummies! Just have your physician give us a call and we’ll work out what works best for you.

We are right in the middle of flu season.  According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), Influenza activity is on the rise in the southeastern United States as compared to the rest of the nation as a whole. For those that have still not been vaccinated, it is not too late. We currently still have flu vaccine available.  It’s important to remember that, while the flu might not seem too scary, it can affect us all, especially the pregnant, young, and elderly. North Carolina has seen at least 4 flu death this year so if you haven’t had your flu shot yet, come see us so we can keep our state and county flu numbers low!

Other vaccinations that are very important as we age are the shingles vaccine and pneumonia vaccines.  The CDC states that 1 in 3 people aged 60 and older who have had the chicken pox will develop shingles and that you can get the shingles again if you’ve had it before.  The CDC recommends that those aged 60 and older should receive the shingles vaccine. The shingles are extremely painful and in rare cases can affect the face, potentially causing blindness. This vaccine can prevent you from having to deal with this disease! As for the pneumonia vaccines, there are currently 2 on the market: the Pneumovax-23 and the Prevnar-13. The CDC recommends that children ages 5 and under receive the Prevnar-13, and that individuals 65 and over receive both the Pneumovax and the Prevnar, waiting 1 year after receiving the Pneumovax before receiving the Prevnar.  At Baldwin Woods Pharmacy, our immunizing pharmacists will be glad to administer your flu, shingles and pneumonia vaccines!  Thank you for reading and we’ll see you soon!
